Past, Present & Future... Smithsonian American History Museum

When the rain drops picked up yesterday we headed to the Museum of American History. And eventually so did everyone else! lol ;)

And for our intro today please welcome...

Mr Grant Lauinger! :)

One of the first displays we went through is the Star Spangled Banner Flag. You see the EXACT flag that was flown in the War of 1812 and which Francis Scott Key penned these words that we know so well today to...

“And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.”

You can't take photos of the actual flag and it is under low light. But just to see it, the actual flag itself, is pretty cool! And unbeknownst to us, before it was under such protection, the owners of the flag let people cut portions of it out to keep as memorabilia. So you see these spaces missing from the end of it and one cut out right in the middle. This demonstration they had set up was a fun one to stop by. It shows how Whitney's Cotton Gin first worked and was so instrumental in helping remove the seeds from the cotton, otherwise a horribly tedious job. In fact, when the boys were learning about this we watched a video that some kind person had put on you tube of a demonstration exactly like this and the more I thought about it, I think it was the exact same guy! lol ;)
A lot of what we saw at this museum were old and ancient items like this...This actual cup was on the Mayflower belonging to William Bradford. It's just so hard to wrap your brain around the fact that we still have items like this and they are still standing and in fairly good condition!
After this face mask of Lincoln was taken he was told he looked too young with no facial hair so from here on out, we know him as having facial hair! lol Little known fact...

And the older boys wanted to be sure and get this photo for Grandma Sjodin! ;)
Some things just don't seem like 'old relics' to me but perhaps if they are to my kids that means.... :O
Look at this stunning Vanna that I happened upon! And his assistant who seems more than enthused with his father! lol
Sometimes you just can't take any more museum items and the stroller isn't cutting it....
But then there's these handsome fellas...
However, when you lay eyes upon this you almost can't believe what you are seeing...
I don't know who these crazy characters are but we quickly walked by them so as to not attract attention...

This display of old Portland was pretty cool to happen upon. It even included street names we are very familiar with...

And the FOOD section of the museum was pretty fun as well. They had a big part on Julia Child and then this graphic of kitchens in the 1950's. My favorite is the part that says "New Kitchen Built to Fit Your Wife." lol ;)

The other thing that was fun to see is this original travel trailer from the 1930's. They began during the depression in order for the men to be able to pick up stakes and travel wherever they needed to for work. They had their inception with a moral, financially frugal beginning being a low-cost housing alternative. However, they quickly became more of a nemesis the more popular they grew and were viewed as a 'social problem,' because they did not pay any real estate taxes. They were called 'trailerites.' And then the first 'trailer park' first was opened in Connecticut.
Phew! I don't think I even covered half of the museum and we certainly could've spent several days just at this one place. But what we did get to see was fun and educational! ;) Now to recoup for the next day...

  1. OK I KNOW I am really dating myself with this one but I remember when I worked for US bank sooooooo many years ago and we used to take 1000 and 5000 dollar bills and I remember when they decided to remove them from circulation. I worked in the Vault then and we had to certify them and return them to the federal reserve. And YES they did have a computer in the bank back then but it took up a whole room (size of a small bedroom) and we all had to share one monitor in the back of the teller row. And to sign on you had to use the written code.... //:Branch id..first initial.last name to get a list of possible places to go. WOW that was a long time ago and now you hold the computer in your hand that is also a phone!!!! Dating myself.
